Havasu's Telesis dominates Ft. Mojave
The dour expression on a coach’s face normally indicates a loss.
In the Telesis Tigers’ case, it was head coach Landon Merrill’s way of telling his team he would have preferred them to perform better.
The Tigers defeated visiting Ft. Mojave 67-33 at Daytona Middle School Tuesday.
“We played down to their level, not up to our level,” Merrill said. “This is a new (Ft. Mojave) team still learning and we should have beaten them by 30 with our JV.”
The Tigers frontcourt of Nathaniel Merrill, Geoff Garrett and Travis Standall controlled the boards but Telesis had trouble transitioning those rebounds into easy baskets.
However, Merrill acknowledged that two factors outside of his team’s effort were also in play. First was playing in the Daytona gymnasium, a switch from the Tigers normal home of the Lake Havasu Community Center.
“We couldn’t be more honored that Daytona is letting us practice here and play games here,” Merrill said. “Daytona has just been terrific and now it’s up to us to get used to a different floor.”
And second big change was the debut of a trio of new offensive schemes that Merrill was looking for his team to work through during the game.
“During the half the guys were getting frustrated at mistakes and I asked them ‘do you get upset with each other in practice? This is a practice. Just talk to each other on what to do right the next time and work through it.’” Merrill said.
Point guard and Nathaniel Merrill led the Tigers in scoring with 22 points each and Garrett had 14.
The Tigers head to Golden Valley Friday for a rare doubleheader. Late last month the Tigers home game with Golden Valley was cut short when city officials closed the Community Center. The make-up game was also cancelled when the teams were unable to secure referees.
That forced Telesis to make-up the game on the road. The boys will plays the delayed game at 5 p.m., followed by the girls at 6:30 then the boys already scheduled away contest at 8 p.m.
“We just have to play our game,” Merrill said. “We have to make our free throws and control the ball like we can.”
